Poke bowls are delicious and are super easy to make. I love how versatile they are because you can make adjustments depending on your mood, the occasion, and the ingredients you have available. They can be as glamorous as you want, or as basic as you want, but end up delicious either way!
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel fancy without putting in much effort and without breaking the bank. Making a poke bowl is a great way that I have been able to reduce how food goes to waste in our house. I find that the simplest and cheapest ingredients added to a bed of fresh sushi rice can make for a perfect meal. I gotta say though, those times when we do splurge on some special ingredients, those poke bowls turn out extra awesome!
Since I’ve started making poke bowls at home more, I’ve almost completely stopped ordering it from restaurants. I mean, when you make it at home, you have more of your favourite ingredients, the proportions you actually want, and it’s less expensive? How could you not feel the same way??
Below, you’ll find a list of my go to ingredients for throwing together a delicious and easy poke bowl. Since this is so easy to make and is a creative way to use up the random ingredients that we all inevitably have in the fridge, I’m going to stick to simple ingredients, so you won’t need to go hunting for all sorts of specialty items. After serious debate, I’m also sharing with you my recipe for the best spicy mayo!
I’ll be sure to share some fancier and more unique ingredients in a separate post for when you want to class things up a bit more!
Protein | Veggies | Fruit (trust me on this) | Sauces | Toppings |
---|---|---|---|---|
Spicy salmon | Cucumber | Apple | Spicy mayo | Toasted sesame seeds |
Spicy tuna | Avocado | Clementine or similar fruit | Soy sauce/Tamari | Furikake |
Crispy baked tofu | Edamame | Blueberries | Unagi sauce | Roasted seaweed |
Chicken nuggets (surprisingly good! | Carrots | Mango | Sriracha | Wasabi |
Smoked Salmon | Seaweed Salad | Sesame Oil | Pickled ginger | |
Shichimi togarashi |
Important note! If you want to use raw fish for your poke bowl, make sure to buy fish that has been properly flash frozen and is meant to be used for sashimi. Your local fish market should know exactly what you are looking for and can help you find it.
